Orthodox Christian single people, while very much a part of our parishes, often find it difficult to be full participants when the traditional activities of the parish center around families, youth, and senior citizens. As a result, it is not easy for singles to meet and get to know one another. Many singles are also parents who are raising children alone and have special needs for support. While the single parent family functions, most single parents find it incomplete and usually seek to marry again.
One response to the plight of Orthodox singles came from a lady in our parish, herself a divorced single mother. She came up with the idea of a singles network that caters exclusively to single Orthodox Christians. There are other types of organizations for unmarrieds, single parents etc. The service is for all single Orthodox, whether widowed, divorced, or never married, who want to meet one another. Those who would like to find pen-pals and simply establish friendships with others living in similar circumstances can also use this network.
This information is sent to members, who can then choose with whom they wish to get in contact. More information is available by writing to:. Think about the singles in your parish – the unmarried, divorced, widowed. Are they actively involved in your parish life?

A growing trust and a spirit of cooperation have developed between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church during the last twenty-five years, not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, our Churches have been led to recognize more profoundly the need to manifest our unity in Christ and to pray for healing the wounds of centuries-old estrangement.
As bishops of these two churches, we hail this progress in mutual commitment to Church unity. We recognize that the Orthodox Church has expressed its seriousness in working for unity in the Church of Christ in this century through encyclicals and gestures of reconciliation. The Pan-Orthodox conferences held at Rhodes and preparations underway for convening a Great and Holy Synod are tangible signs of hope.
We also recognize that the Roman Catholic Church, especially at the Second Vatican Council , committed itself to the cause of Christian unity and recognized its close ties with the Orthodox Church. The creation of the Vatican Secretariat now Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity is one sign of its dedication to restoring visible unity. Both our churches welcomed the establishment in of the official Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue.
Notwithstanding the difficulties this commission has encountered and no doubt will continue to encounter, we rejoice in the work which it has already accomplished. Twice each year members of the U. Eastern Orthodoxy , official name Orthodox Catholic Church , one of the three major doctrinal and jurisdictional groups of Christianity. It is characterized by its continuity with the apostolic church, its liturgy, and its territorial churches. Its adherents live mainly in the Balkans , the Middle East , and former Soviet countries. Eastern Orthodoxy is the large body of Christians who follow the faith and practices that were defined by the first seven ecumenical councils.
These terms are sometimes misleading, especially when applied to Russian or Slavic churches and to the Orthodox communities in western Europe and America. From the time of the Council of Chalcedon in to the late 20th century, the Oriental Orthodox churches were out of communion with the Roman Catholic Church and later the Eastern Orthodox Church because of a perceived difference in doctrine regarding the divine and human natures of Jesus.

A factor that figures prominently in determining the date of Easter is the date of the Jewish Passover. Originally, Passover was celebrated on the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Christians, therefore, celebrated Easter according to the same calculation.
The correlation between the date of Easter and the date of Passover is clear. In response to this ongoing problem, the First Ecumenical Council of the one Christian church convened at Nicaea in A. It determined that Easter should be celebrated on the Sunday that follows the first full moon after the vernal equinox — the actual beginning of spring. If the full moon happens to fall on a Sunday, Easter is observed the following Sunday.
The day taken to be the invariable date of the vernal equinox is March Hence, the determination of the date of Easter is governed by a process dependent on the vernal equinox and the phase of the moon as long as Jewish Passover is concluded. Most Christians eventually ceased to regulate the observance of Easter by the Jewish Passover. Their purpose, of course, was to preserve the original practice of celebrating Easter following the vernal equinox without taking into consideration the Jewish Passover.

As any sacrament, marriage pertains to the eternal life in the Kingdom of God and therefore, is not dissolved by the death of one partner. How is it a mystery? They come together, and the two are made one. They have not become the image of anything earthly, but of God Himself. They come in order to be made one body; behold the mystery of love! John Chrysostom, Homily 12 on Colossians. Marriage is a “mystery” that involves human love and divine love, the very sign and image of God’s presence with humanity.
Marriage is an event in which Jesus Christ Himself participates through the presence of the priest, and that of the praying community, the church.
